PyCon Ireland

PyCon Ireland was held last weekend. It was a great success and I can’t wait for next years conference.

I present a talk on front end web performance and development. How it is difficult to create a consistent, fast user interface, without breaking the principle of Don’t Repeat Yourself which pretty much all frameworks try to adhere too. Two other talks, one presented just prior to mine and the second just after, by Arthor Cistov discussed the same issues but he had a lot better slides and went more in-depth into the JavaScript / HTML side of the discussion.

Here is my presentation on slideshare.net. Hopefully I can get motivated to blog about this topic in the future.

Introducing Python for Java Programmers – Galway Python Meetup

leave a comment »

I will be giving a talk next Wednesday the 3rd March as part of the Galway Python Meetup group. It will take place in the main conference room on the 1st floor of DERI. See this google map for directions.

I will cover the basics of the Python language by using many real world examples using Jython.

Jython is version of Python running in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). We will explain the basic syntax of Python for those who are new to the language but have some Java
knowledge. We will also show some advanced uses of Jython to integrate and extend your Java program with Python.

The goal of the talk is for people to come away with ideas on how to start using Python at work or personally without throwing out previous w work but instead by building on it.

More information can be found on the python.ie website.

New year, new town

My new years resolution is to blog, so here goes. This is just an secondary introduction post since the last one was in November 2008, which was a while back. So since this is only my second posting I have decided to redo it.

Most of the posts will be about Python and web development in Python, as that is what I do for my job at www.faceoffgames.com. I use the Django web framework at work so will hopefully publish a few posting related to developing and deploying web sites with that.

I have just recently moved to Galway and will to trying to start the Galway Python meetup so I will try and post something about that too. Our next meetup is on 3rd February and you can see more about it here.
